To form the feminine nouns follow these rules:

  • Words that end in -o, drop the -o and add -a to form the feminine noun.
    • architect / el arquitecto (masc.), la arquitecta (fem.)

     

    • EXCEPTION: The following nouns remain constant:
      • guard / el guardia (m), la guardia (f)
      • guide / el guía (m), la guía (f)
      • model / el modelo (m), la modelo (f)
  •  

  • Words that end in a consonant, add -a directly.
    • accountant / el contador (m), la contadora (f)

     

    • EXCEPTION: The following noun remain constant:
      • consul / el cónsul (m), la cónsul (f)
      • officer / el oficial (m), la oficial (f)

       

  • Words that end in -ta and -e remain constant.
    • contractor / el contratista (m), la contratista (f)
    • agent / el agente (m), la agente (f)

     

    • EXCEPTION:
      • president/ el presidente (m), la presidenta (f)
