a. DESDE is used to express a beginning; it means since or from. DESDE can be replaced with de:
EXAMPLES
- Vine desde (de) mi casa en auto./ I came from my house by car.
- Empezamos a trabajar desde las seis de la mañana./ We have started to working since six in the morning.
- Te mandé una tarjeta de Chile./ I sent you a card from Chile.
b. DESDE...HASTA.
Desde expresses the beginning, and hasta expresses the end. They can be replaced with de and a.
EXAMPLES
- Todos, desde los empleados hasta los gerentes, trabajaron sin parar./ Everyone, from the employees to the management, worked non-stop.
- Mi socio viajó de Perú al Brasil en helicóptero./ My partner flew from Peru to Brazil by helicopter.

IX. EN/ in , at, into, on, inside, over
a. EN is used to indicate a definite place or position:
EXAMPLES
- Nos conocimos en una fiesta./ We met at a party.
- Dejaré los documentos en la oficina./ I'll leave you the documents in the office.
b. EN is used to indicate means of transportation:
EXAMPLES
- En la Argentina todos viajan en colectivo./ In Argentina, everybody commutes by bus.
- Los gerentes irán al Ecuador en avión./ The managers will go to Ecuador by plane.
EXCEPTIONS:
- Ana monta a caballo./ Ana rides a horse.
- Vamos a la escuela a pie./ We go to school on foot.
c. EN is used with certain time expressions that contain these words: momento/moment, instante/instant, tiempo/ time, and época/epoch.
EXAMPLES
- Empezó a llover en el instante que salimos./ The moment we left, it started to rain.
- En los tiempos de hambre no hay pan duro./ During times of hunger, there is no stale bread.
d. EN is used as a synonym of sobre/on:
EXAMPLES
- Ponga el televisor en la mesita./ Place the television set on the little table.
- Colguemos el cuadro en la pared./ Let's hang the painting on the wall.
e. EN is used as into:
EXAMPLE
- El perro se metió en la cama./ The dog got into the bed.
f. EN is used to express a state or manner in which something is done:
EXAMPLES
- Este reloj antiguo está en buenas condiciones./ This antique watch is in good condition.
- Cuando levanto unas pesas, mis músculos se ponen en tensión./ When I lift some weight, my muscles get tensed.
g. EN is used to describe a setting (atmosphere):
EXAMPLES
- Tenemos que vivir en armonía con el medio ambiente./ We need to live in harmony with the environment.
- En la Navidad mis vecinos van cantando de puerta en puerta./ In Christmas my neighbors go singing from door to door.
h. EN is used to express time in a general sense:
EXAMPLES
- En el verano hace calor./ It's hot during summer.
- En las noches hace frío./ It's cold at night.
