1. In Spanish, months are not capitalized.
- January / enero
- February / febrero
- March / marzo
- April / abril
- May / mayo
- June / junio
- July / julio
- August / agosto
- September / septiembre
- October / octubre
- November / noviembre
- December / diciembre
2. The number is followed by the preposition de/of and then the month:
EXAMPLES:
- Hoy es el dos de enero. / Today is January 2 (second).
- Ayer fue el diez de marzo./ Yesterday was March 10 (tenth).
NOTE: Usually, the article el is included when saying the date orally, but sometimes it is omitted in writing.
3. In Spanish, cardinal numbers (arabic numberals: uno, dos, tres, cuatro, etc) are used for dates except for the first/primero.
EXAMPLES
- Hoy es primero de enero./ Today is January 1 (first).
- Mañana es el dos de enero./ Tomorrow is January 2 (second).
- Nos vemos el quince de marzo./ We'll see each other on March 15 (fifteenth).
NOTE: The day precedes the month. For instance, 6/9/99 means September 6, 1999.
4. Some phrases to remember about date
- ¿Qué fecha es hoy?/ What's today's date?
- Hoy es el 3 de febrero./ Today is February 3.
- ¿Qué día es hoy? / What day is today?
- Hoy es lunes./ Today is Monday.
- ¿Hoy es 1° de octubre? / Is today October 1?
- No, hoy es 30 de septiembre./ No, today is September 30.
