NÚMEROS CARDINALES/ CARDINAL NUMBERS

CULTURAL NOTES: In Spanish, the comma is used to indicate decimal places and the period to separate whole numbers into groups of three (thousand, million, billion, etc.).

SOME RULES TO REMEMBER

1. Uno alone or in a compound number drops its -o before a masculine noun. Un or una is used depending on the gender of the noun uno modifies.

EXAMPLES

• Es número uno./ It's number one.
• Se robaron un camión./ They stole one truck.
• También se robaron una cartera./ They also stole one hand bag.

2. Cardinal numbers are invariable. The exceptions are uno and multiple of cientos (trescientos, cuatrocientos, etc). They agree in gender with the noun they modify.

EXAMPLES

• Este libro tiene doscientas páginas./ This book has two hundred pages.
• Compraremos trescientas tarjetas./ We'll buy three hundred cards.

3. Cien is equivalent to one hundred only, including in 100,000 (cien mil). All numbers greater than one hundred (100) is ciento(s).

EXAMPLES

• 100 = cien
• 110 = ciento diez
• 200 = doscientos
• 300.000 = trescientos mil
• 100.000 = cien mil
• 100.700 = cien mil setecientos
• 102.500 = ciento dos mil quinientos

4. Cien and mil do NOT require any articles, unlike English.

EXAMPLES

• Deposito cien dólares./ I deposit one hundred dollars.
• Pagué mil pesos./I paid a thousand pesos.

5. Unlike English, numbers above 900 are NEVER counted as hundred.

EXAMPLE

• (1200) Mil doscientos./ Twelve hundred or one thousand two hundred.

6. Millón is a noun; therefore, the preposition de is required whenever millón is used with another noun.

EXAMPLES

• Tres millones de turistas./ Three million tourists.
• Dos millones de botellas./ Two million bottles.
• Cuatro millones de pesos./ Four million pesos.

7. In Spanish, otro/other goes before the number; however, in English other goes after the number.

EXAMPLES

• Hay otros tres pedidos./ There are three other orders.
• Vendimos otros dos autos./ We sold two other cards.
